Born in London England on 6 March 1966 and an indigene of Osun State in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Charles is an accomplished litigation practitioner and former international prosecutor. He has practiced in the area of international, ‘white-collar’ and business crimes for two decades within Nigeria, the UK, and at various international courts and tribunals.   He founded Charles Anthony (Lawyers) LLP, following a distinguished legal career as an international prosecutor and senior lawyer within the United Nations Organisation, which spanned over 12 years.

Domestically, Charles has acted in several large-scale ‘white-collar’ prosecution and defence matters involving a wide range of electronic and financial crimes, including money laundering; advance fee fraud; large scale importation of narcotics; excise duty and complex corporate fraud, counterfeiting and other violations of intellectual property rights. He advises domestic and international law enforcement, anti-graft and regulatory agencies, government departments on various aspects of ‘white-collar’ prosecutions and investigations in connection with business, cyber and international crimes; tracing proceeds of fraud; anti-money laundering protocols; extradition, jurisdictional and regulatory issues.

He has practiced on the international criminal litigation circuit since 1998. For over a decade he led with great success, teams of international criminal lawyers in the complex and pioneering prosecution of those who bore the greatest responsibility for the 1994 Rwandan genocide during which, an estimated 800,000 civilians were killed. He is currently admitted to practice as lead defence counsel before several international courts and tribunals, including the Special Tribunal for Lebanon were he represents the interests of members of the Shi'a Muslim militant group-Hezbollah, suspected of international terrorism.

As an international prosecutor, Charles prevailed in trials against some of the world’s most reputed criminal litigation lawyers including Ramsey Clarke–the 66th Attorney-General of the United States (1967–69) and lawyer to controversial figures such as Slobodan Milošević, Radovan Karadzic and Saddam Hussein; Edward Medvene–who represented Fred Goldman in the civil action against O. J. Simpson over the killing of his son Ron Goldman; celebrated French lawyer, François Roux; and Steven Kay QC, the court- appointed lawyer for former Serbian President, Slobodan Milošević.

He is a sought-after public speaker and lecturer in the field of international, ‘white-collar’ and business crimes and has been an invited guest speaker at several prestigious educational institutions worldwide. He has served as a lecturer in several European Union funded capacity building training workshops on various aspects of domestic and international criminal litigation practice including those orgainsed for prosecutors; Judges of the Supreme and High Courts in various civil and common law jurisdictions.

Through his extensive international litigation and advisory practice, Charles has gained vast experience of using the most advanced document management, litigation process and transcripts management software’s.  He has also gained an internationally acclaimed reputation for mentoring lawyers from a diverse range of legal and ethnic backgrounds, many of whom have progressed to lead complex international trials.

He was educated at CMS Grammar School Lagos, the independent British boarding school Repton, following which he read law at Warwick University from where he graduated in 1989 and at the School of African and Oriental Studies, University of London where he obtained his Masters degree in law in 1994.  He was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1992 and in 1996, as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.

He is a member of various professional associations including; the Law Society of England and Wales; International Association of Prosecutors; International Criminal Law Network; Nigerian Bar Association; Chartered Institute of Arbitrators England and Wales; Commonwealth Lawyers Association and the International Bar Association.
